About the museum
The Museo della Tecnologia Contadina was founded in 1976 within the Centro di Cultura Popolare UNLA, the volunteer body for lifelong education linked to the Unione Nazionale per la Lotta all’Analfabetismo, which was founded in Santu Lussurgiu in 1951 by a group of teachers and students. The museum was conceived by the teacher Francesco Salis, who oversaw its set-up and promotion through studies and research in demo-ethno-anthropology.
It is housed in an 18th-century two-storey manor house that once belonged to a local noblewoman: eleven of its twenty-three rooms are used for the museum. It holds more than two thousand work tools and everyday objects, donated by families of Lussurgiu and catalogued over more than twenty years of work, which document the agro-pastoral civilisation of the village and the productive activities of the past.
The rooms are organised by category: information panels, the bell-tower clock and the maize sheller; tools for working the land, storing cereals and for the work of shepherds and charcoal burners; implements for spinning, weaving and sewing; kitchen utensils; craftsmen’s tools; large farm machinery; water mills, millstones and stills; tools for viticulture and winemaking; cheese-making and olive-press equipment; and a room with archaeological finds. The collection is completed by work clothes, festive clothes and ceremonial dress.
