About the museum

The Roccapelago fortress stands on a rocky spur above 1,000 metres, overlooking the Pelago basin. It was a castle of the Montegarullo family, already mentioned in 753. Obizzo da Montegarullo (1347–1415), lord of Frignano and Garfagnana, rebelled several times against the Este family and in 1408 lost much of his territory. In 1586 the church of the Conversione di San Paolo was built within the old castle, with a bell tower dating from 1765.

In 2011, under the floor of the church, a funerary crypt was discovered containing the remains of more than three hundred people buried between the 16th and 18th centuries, about a hundred of whom were partly mummified. The finds, with clothing, embroidery, buttons and devotional and personal objects, are now displayed in four rooms recovered in the old castle.

The route includes the exhibition “Sulle orme di Obizzo da Montegarullo” and the section on the Roccapelago mummies. Visits are guided and run by the volunteer association Pro Rocca.
