Museum complex on the Lecco lakefront with a modern and contemporary art gallery, a photo library and the Museo dell’Alpinismo Lecchese, plus temporary exhibitions.
Medardo Rosso's sculptures devoted to childhood, including “Aetas aurea”, are compared with a Madonna and Child by Donatello from Santa Trinita in Florence.
Photographs by eight photographers chronicle Italian rock festivals of the 1970s from the perspective of fans and professionals. The route is completed by posters by a well-known graphic designer against stereotypes and censorship.
About the museum
Palazzo delle Paure stands in the historic centre of Lecco and overlooks the lakefront promenade. It was built in 1916 in an eclectic neo-medieval style to house the Intendenza di Finanza (tax office), and because of this function it received the nickname “delle Paure” (“of fears”). The complex also includes the adjoining arcaded building, built in 1902 by the architect Adriano Gazzari. It has four floors, and a rectangular tower built around 1926 bears a marble coat of arms with the Visconti serpent (biscione) set into it.
Today the palace is the main hub of the Sistema museale urbano lecchese (Si.M.U.L.). The first floor hosts temporary exhibitions; the second floor houses the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, formed of paintings that came to the municipality of Lecco through donations and acquisitions: from 18th-century allegories to Romantic realism, through abstraction and conceptual art to artistic photography, with works by local artists such as Sottocornola, Vitali and Stefanoni and by masters such as Baj, Scanavino, Rotella and Pomodoro. A section of prints and photography presents material from the civic collections on a rotating basis.
The photo library holds around 4,000 photographs and postcards of the Lecco area, of places linked to Manzoni and of the two world wars, while on the third floor the Museo dell’Alpinismo Lecchese tells the story of the area’s great mountaineering tradition, with a multimedia section and a display of objects donated to the CAI Lecco.
