About the museum
The museum is housed in Palazzo Sinesi, a building erected in the last decade of the 19th century, now owned by the state. Since 1994 the palace has also hosted thematic exhibitions and is the seat of the Fondazione Archeologica Canosina, which works alongside the protection of archaeological heritage in Apulia.
The permanent display consists mainly of grave goods from the necropolises of Canosa. The finds document customs, mentalities and the quality of local craftsmanship between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC, from Daunian vases of the Archaic period to the grave goods of the Hellenistic hypogea.
The route covers eight rooms. The Sala dell’Ariete displays Daunian sub-geometric vases with metal objects and amber from the tombs of Vico Pasubio and Via Legnano; the Sala dei crateri presents material from the Ipogeo di Vico San Martino, including Apulian red-figure pottery, weapons and metal objects. The following rooms house the grave goods of the Ipogeo Varrese, discovered in 1912 and rediscovered in 1971, comprising over four hundred finds: large Apulian red-figure vases and the polychrome vases known as “canosini”, in which pink predominates.
