About the museum
The park preserves the medieval historic centre of the old Carbonara, the name that Aquilonia bore until 1861. The settlement was destroyed by the earthquake of 1930 and rebuilt on higher ground.
In the ancient Piazza Municipio the original paving has survived. There are the remains of two churches and of several buildings, such as the pretura (magistrates’ court), the monte frumentario (grain bank) and the prison, and traces of an ancient castle. A two-tiered Baroque fountain from the 18th century served as a watering trough and a wash-house.
The square hosts performances and cultural events. The park also houses the Museo delle città itineranti (Museum of Itinerant Towns), devoted to towns that were rebuilt elsewhere after natural disasters or wars.
