About the museum

The museum opened in 2003 under the title “La guerra sulla porta” on the initiative of the Centro Studi per la Val di Sole, the Comune di Peio and the ASUC di Peio. It tells the story of the First World War at high altitude, the so-called Guerra Bianca, and the involvement of the Peio community.

The route focuses on everyday life for the soldiers on the front that ran from the Tonale Pass to the Gavia, and for the population who stayed behind the lines. Among the exhibits are a field kitchen, a supply trolley, a first-aid hut and a trench tabernacle with a portable altar. The museum also has a library, soldiers’ diaries and a collection of videos on the Great War.

Above the museum lies the former military cemetery of San Rocco, in a panoramic position, with a war memorial built in 1916; it holds remains recovered from nearby glaciers since 2004. Every year, at the beginning of September, a commemoration is held there.
