About the museum
The Piccolo Museo del Diario was created in Pieve Santo Stefano, the “città del diario” (city of the diary), to make known the Archivio Diaristico Nazionale, founded here by Saverio Tutino, and the autobiographical testimonies of ordinary people that it preserves. For years, visitors who climbed to the Palazzo Pretorio, drawn by the sign at the entrance to the town, found only folders with texts and learned about the stories of the diaries by word of mouth. The Lenzuolo (sheet) di Clelia Marchi, for example, was kept in a display case until 2013 and shown only once a year.
The museum, opened in 2013, was designed with the design studio dotdotdot and draws inspiration from the book “Il paese dei diari” (“The Village of Diaries”) by Mario Perrotta. The route is multisensory and interactive: the diaries, which at night leave their shelves in search of similar stories, become sound and visual installations, including the “confessionali” (confessionals) made of whispers and murmurs.
The visit is always guided and takes the visitor through the writings of ordinary people who tell the history of Italy from below, through letters, memoirs and diaries. The museum is housed in the Palazzo Pretorio, next to the spaces of the Archive.
