Exhibition devoted to Alberto Burri's tempera works, with more than one hundred pieces, including small and medium-format paintings, drawings and graphic works, many rarely shown, that reveal his experimentation with colour.
About the museum
The Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco stand on the outskirts of Città di Castello. They were built immediately after the war to dry tropical tobacco; in 1966, by then out of use, they housed the volumes of the Biblioteca Nazionale and of the Tribunale di Firenze damaged by the flood, awaiting restoration. The complex consists of eleven sheds.
At the end of the 1970s Alberto Burri obtained one of the sheds as a studio, because his works had reached monumental dimensions. Convinced that the entire structure could house his latest creations, he bought it and in the summer of 1990 opened the second venue of the Fondazione Burri. The conversion of the spaces to museum standards and the extension of the basement level are the work of the architect Tiziano Sarteanesi.
128 works are on display, including four large sculptures, one inside and three in the garden in front of the museum. The common feature of the paintings is Cellotex, an insulating wood-based composite that Burri used as a support from the beginning and which in the 1970s he left exposed, incising, scratching or painting it. The works are grouped in cycles, which can only be understood as a whole. Since 2015 remediation, restoration and extension of the buildings have been under way: the basement level houses all the graphic works and a documentary section, and a section for temporary exhibitions has also been opened.
