About the museum
The Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri was established in 1978 by the artist Alberto Burri, born in Città di Castello, with an initial donation of 32 works. It takes its name from the palace that houses it, a 15th-century building in the Florentine Renaissance style in the historic centre, which belonged to the Albizzini family.
The building was bought by the Cassa di Risparmio di Città di Castello and lent free of charge to the Foundation for ninety-nine years. The restoration, carried out under Burri’s own guidance, preserved the Renaissance structure and the white walls, while equipping the building with modern installations. The museum opened to the public in December 1981.
The works, chosen personally by Burri, are arranged in chronological order in about twenty rooms. They cover forty years of research and include the cycles of the Catrami, Muffe, Gobbi, Sacchi, Legni, Ferri, Combustioni, Cretti and Cellotex. From 1990 the collection is completed by a second venue, the former Seccatoi del Tabacco, devoted to the large cycles and to graphic works.
