About the museum

The Pinacoteca di Santa Maria degli Angeli is housed in the church of the same name in Castroreale, built from 1566 at the wish of Ottaviano Preconio, archbishop of Palermo and a native of the town, and adjoining a convent of Poor Clares in the heart of the former Jewish quarter. Under the laws of 1866 the church and the convent were taken over by the Demanio (state property administration). In the 20th century the convent housed schools and was altered, with the destruction of the cloister and of the 15th-century portal.

Around 1970 the idea arose of setting up a gallery in a church no longer open for worship, chosen for its central position and good state of preservation. After the Gulf of Patti earthquake of 1978 the building served as a store for works from damaged churches. With the opening of the Museo Civico in the former Oratorio dei Padri Filippini, the church became an exhibition venue, and since 20 August 2005 it has housed the Museo Parrocchiale degli Arredi Sacri.

The collection brings together the sacred heritage of chapels, churches, convents and oratories in the area that were destroyed, decommissioned or made unsafe. The display is not chronological but follows theological themes in four sections. The works include a Nativity panel from the school of Giovanni Filippo Criscuolo, silver processional crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries and a repoussé silver altar frontal by silversmiths from Messina.
