About the museum
The museum displays works of art from chapels, churches, convents, monasteries and oratories in the Castroreale area, including from places of worship that are in ruin, decommissioned or unsafe. It is housed in the former oratory of the Padri Filippini (Philippine Fathers), built in 1632 beside the church of San Filippo Neri. The oratory was promoted in 1631 by Damiano Fava, who used his own income to buy some houses and transform them into a new institution.
In the 19th century the building was partly occupied by the military command and, after its transfer to the municipality in 1867, was adapted as a secondary school and primary schools. After the Gulf of Patti earthquake of 1978, which severely damaged the city's artistic heritage, the municipal administration assigned the restored former oratory to house the civic museum and the historic archive. The museum was established in 1984 and has been open to the public since 1989.
On the ground floor and in the courtyard are the marble works, the wooden sculptures and the clock mechanisms from bell towers. On the first floor are paintings, modern art installations, sacred furnishings and the precious volumes of the historic archive. Among the works stand out the sarcophagus and arch of Geronimo Rosso, carved by Antonello Gagini between 1506 and 1508, the Madonna delle Grazie by Antonello de Saliba, a Salvator Mundi attributed to Polidoro da Caravaggio and a 15th-century wooden Crucifix.
