About the museum
The Pinacoteca Civica Levis Sismonda opened on 19 December 2021 in an old building in the historic centre of Racconigi, at the corner of Via Morosini and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The project was promoted by the City of Racconigi and designed by the Associazione Culturale Carlo Sismonda, with the support of the Fondazione CRT.
On the ground floor is a selection of about forty works by Carlo Sismonda (Racconigi, 1929–2011), a painter of the Italian figurative tradition with post-Impressionist and neo-Expressionist accents, known for landscapes, portraits, still lifes and sacred subjects in intense colour. The upper floor hosts a selection from the civic collection of Giuseppe Augusto Levis (born in Chiomonte, 1873), bequeathed to the city in his will. From 1901 Levis lived on the Cayre estate in Racconigi, where he met Tsar Nicholas II, which gave rise to his nickname “painter of the Tsar”. His favourite subjects are the valleys of Piedmont, the First World War, in which he took part as a volunteer, and views of the Netherlands, Russia and North Africa.
