About the museum

The complex stands on the Maniace plain, where in 1040 the Byzantine general George Maniakes is said to have defeated a Saracen army. In memory of the battle he left the Basilian monks an icon of the Virgin nursing the Child, attributed to Saint Luke. Around 1100 a church was built to house the icon, and the site became a destination for pilgrimages.

In 1173 Queen Margaret of Navarre, wife of William I, had a larger church and a Benedictine monastery built, linked to the abbey of Monreale. A watchtower and vast feudal estates were also added, making the abbey one of the most important monastic communities in Sicily.

In 1799 Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies gave the abbey and the surrounding lands, about 15,000 hectares, to the British admiral Horatio Nelson as a reward for suppressing the Parthenopean Republic. The title of Duke of Bronte remained with his descendants, who lived in the Ducea (ducal estate) until 1981, when the property passed to the Comune di Bronte. After about seven years of restoration, the building reopened to the public in April 2023.

The noble section holds furnishings, paintings and memorabilia linked to the Nelson family; a multimedia route in five rooms tells the story of the abbey and its dukes. The visit also includes the church of Santa Maria with its Gothic-Norman portal, the remains of the abbey, the garden, the park and the Celtic cross in lava stone.
