About the museum
The Rohrerhaus is the old “fire house” of the Rohrerhof farm, in the locality of Rungg, a listed building on the southern edge of the centre of Sarentino. The first documentary mentions date from the late 13th century, both in the parish urbarium (land register) of Sarentino and in that of the Count of Tyrol, Mainardo II. The oldest parts of the house date from 1325/26, the Gothic stube from around 1530, while the ridge beam of the roof bears the date 1703. Over the centuries the house was altered and extended several times.
The farm, already among the most respected in Sarentino in the 18th century, rarely changed families, and its owners often held important positions in the village, both religious and civic. The present owner moved the farm to a nearby hill and sold the old house to the Comune di Sarentino.
After the purchase by the Comune, the house was restored between 2004 and 2007 and set up as a museum. The Verein Rohrerhaus association, founded in 2004 by a working group that had followed the restoration work, runs the museum and collects objects to furnish the house, its outbuildings and the outdoor area in an authentic way, as if the farming family still lived there. The route includes the smoke kitchen, the Gothic stube and the rooms, as well as the kitchen garden and the demonstration field. The association also organises courses, evenings and initiatives devoted to the traditions, crafts and costumes of Sarentino.
