About the museum
Saepinum was a small Roman town linked to transhumance and wool production. It took its present form in the Augustan age, developing on an earlier Samnite settlement of the 4th century BC; its walls have four gates.
Only about a quarter of the town has been excavated. Visible structures include the forum, the basilica, public and private buildings, and places of entertainment. The theatre is one of the best-known elements: in the 18th century rural houses were built on its tiers, using the ancient structures as foundations, and today the museum is housed there.
The site also preserves medieval remains and 18th-century peasant houses. The Parco archeologico di Sepino was established by the Ministero della Cultura in 2021 and comprises the archaeological area and the Museo della città e del territorio.
