About the museum
The Museo civico “Enrico Sannia” is located in Morcone, in the province of Benevento, in the historic Casa Sannia, a large palazzo lived in by the Sannia family from the 16th to the 19th century. Figures from this family include the judge and patriot Liberantonio Sannia, the mathematician and politician Achille Sannia, the mathematician Gustavo Sannia, the man of letters Enrico Sannia and, more recently, the film director Enrico Sannia. A fine 18th-century portal opens onto the building, which still has its old kitchen and a walled garden with a small open-air theatre.
Today the house brings together the civic museum, the historic archive and the municipal library. The archive and the library hold a rich heritage of documents and books from the 17th to the 19th century, enlarged by donations from citizens and institutions.
The museum displays a small archaeological collection that testifies to settlements from the Samnite and Roman periods, a collection of late 19th-century photographs, a collection of contemporary art and historic memorabilia.
