About the museum
The Sala d’Arte San Giovanni is housed in the former oratory of San Giovanni Battista, in the centre of Castiglione d’Orcia, a building erected between the late 16th and early 17th century. Since 2006 it has held a small collection of works from the churches of the area and is part of the network of the Fondazione Musei Senesi.
The core of the collection is five paintings of the Madonna and Child by Sienese masters of the 14th and 15th centuries, among them Simone Martini, il Vecchietta and Giovanni di Paolo. Alongside the paintings are liturgical furnishings from local churches, including two old moulds for blessed bread and for communion hosts.
The Fondazione Musei Senesi also runs the Torre di Tentennano and the Rocca Aldobrandesca di Rocca d’Orcia together with the Sala d’Arte; these have their own entrances and opening hours.
