About the museum
The Museo dell’olio di Seggiano is a dispersed museum, founded in 2012 on the initiative of the Comune di Seggiano and the Fondazione Le Radici di Seggiano. It extends through the historic centre of the village on the slopes of Monte Amiata. The place name also gives its name to the PDO oil Olivastra Seggianese.
The route begins in a large cistern on the walls, where an olive tree rescued from a landslide is on display, suspended by its roots and kept alive with a steam-based aeroponic technology developed together with the Facoltà di Agraria di Firenze. Sensors are planned to study the plant’s reactions, as well as an art machine that will make its electrical activity visible.
The visit also includes a 19th-century oil mill, the oratory of San Rocco with frescoes from 1490, some rooms of the former town hall and a new oleoteca (oil shop and tasting room) on the square, where tastings can be held and short-supply-chain products bought.
