About the museum

The sanctuary of Santa Vittoria extends over almost 22 hectares on the edge of the Giara di Serri. In the Nuragic period the area had a defensive function, as an archaic nuraghe and a nuraghe with several towers show; later, probably between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, it became an important place of worship, frequented by communities from the whole surrounding district.

The heart of the sanctuary is the well temple dedicated to the cult of water, built of massive basalt blocks: pilgrims brought offerings there, including amber necklaces, metal objects and small bronzes depicting human figures, animals and objects. Among the most significant monuments are the hypaethral temple (tempio ipetrale), the festival enclosure (recinto delle feste) and the area of dwellings, with the largest Nuragic assembly hut so far found in Sardinia.

The sacred vocation of the place continued over the centuries, as shown by the Byzantine burials and the small church of Santa Maria della Vittoria; every 11 September the community of Serri goes there in procession. The site was brought to light by the excavations of Antonio Taramelli between 1907 and 1929 and is still being studied. Its management is entrusted to the Fondazione Pe.Trass.
