About the museum
The castle was built by the lords of Völs, ministerials of the Prince-Bishops of Bressanone, and stands on a hill above Fiè allo Sciliar. A document of 1244 mentions a “castrum montis sancti Valentini” that may refer to Prösels; the first certain mention of the medieval fortress dates from 1279, when it appears as “castrum Presil”.
The most important figure of the family was Leonhard von Völs-Colonna (1458–1530), for a long time captain of Tyrol in the Adige valley and burgrave of Tyrol. He transformed the fortress into a residential complex in which late Gothic and Renaissance forms merge, equipping it with modern defences in the taste of Emperor Massimiliano I.
With the extinction of the Völs line in 1804 the castle changed hands several times, partly fell into ruin and was restored on several occasions. After the death of the last private owner in 1978, the complex was taken over in 1981 by the Kuratorium Schloss Prösels, a cooperative that restored it and opened it to the public also for events, exhibitions and concerts. Today the guided route covers the courtyard, the castle chapel, the Kaminzimmer, the Knights' Hall (Sala dei Cavalieri), the rooms of Captain Leonhard von Völs and the armoury.
