About the museum
In 1987 the Bolzano municipal council decided to set up a school museum, on the model of similar institutions in Central Europe. After feasibility studies and the collection of furniture, books, photographs and teaching aids, the museum was officially established in 1993 and opened on 12 May 1995 in the “Elisabetta” school, now the “Dante Alighieri” school; it was the first school museum in Italy.
In 2015 the museum moved to the Lamplhaus, a former inn, the “Gasthof zum Lamm”, in the Rencio district, a historic building that once also housed the neighbourhood school. The exhibition lets visitors rediscover aspects of school life in the past, with particular attention to the history of schooling in Bolzano and South Tyrol between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The rooms preserve a classroom with original furnishings, teaching charts and aids, and books and school exercise books. The museum documents German- and Italian-language school traditions, and it is the first school museum in Europe to include the schools of linguistic minorities as well. It also offers a museum library and educational programmes.
