About the museum

The Domus Romana is on Via del Varrone, in the historic centre of Asti, and preserves the remains of a dwelling in ancient Hasta, the Roman settlement attested from the 2nd century BC and therefore older than Alba and Turin. The house belonged to a wealthy family and stood just north of the Decumanus Maximus, near the forum, a sought-after location for affluent citizens.

The site offers a tangible picture of domestic life in the imperial age. Its most valuable feature is the floor mosaic of the triclinium, the dining room, dating between the 1st and 2nd century AD and considered of exceptional quality for Piedmont. The excavation also shows stretches of wall with fragments of painted plaster and the brick pilae of the hypocaust, the underfloor heating system in which hot air produced by a furnace circulated beneath the floors.

The site is part of the network of the Musei di Asti and is included in the city’s Smarticket, together with Palazzo Mazzetti, the Cripta di Sant’Anastasio, Palazzo Alfieri, the Museo Guglielminetti and the Torre Troyana.
