About the museum
The Museo Alfieriano is housed in the palace where the poet and tragedian Vittorio Alfieri was born on 16 January 1749. The building has medieval origins; around the middle of the 18th century the architect Benedetto Alfieri, the poet’s uncle, redesigned some parts, giving the courtyard a lively and theatrical appearance. Alfieri lived in this house until about the age of five, before the many journeys that took him all over Europe.
The visit tells the author’s life through original furnishings from the birthplace and objects linked to his literary work, his travels and his passions. Among the best-known rooms are the bedroom where he was born, the Salone (hall) and the Salone del Podio, which houses the section on the stage success of Alfieri’s works in the 20th century, with portraits, busts, casts, costume sketches and stage models.
The palace also houses the Centro di Studi Alfieriani, devoted to the study of the poet’s life and works, and the Museo della scenografia Eugenio Guglielminetti. The museum is part of the network of the Musei di Asti managed by the Fondazione Asti Musei.
