About the museum
SMO (Slovensko multimedialno okno, “Slovene multimedia window”) is a landscape and narrative museum based in San Pietro al Natisone, in the Valli del Natisone. It is not based on a collection of objects but on stories, art installations and multimedia that tell the story of the cultural landscape from the Julian Alps to the Gulf of Trieste, from the Mangart to the sea.
The museum is part of a network of five museums run by the Istituto per la cultura slovena and dedicated to the Slovene-speaking communities of the Val Canale, the Val Resia, the Valli del Torre, the Cornappo, the Natisone and the Judrio valleys. It arose within a cross-border cooperation programme between Italy and Slovenia; the space was designed by the architect Donatella Ruttar.
The route includes installations such as “Meja”, a multimedia sculpture showing how borders have changed from the 6th century to today; an interactive toponymic atlas on a large screen; a triptych of videos on cultural landscapes from Tarvisio to Trieste; the “talking library”, in which the author of a book appears on screen; and sound works with voices, memories and music of the seven landscapes.
