About the museum
Cjase Cocèl is the museum of rural life in Fagagna, in the hilly Friuli region. The name recalls the Chiarvesio family, nicknamed Cocèl, who lived in the house for a long time. The building is an old rural dwelling, parts of which date from the 17th century, restored in keeping with the characteristics of the Friulian house. The museum has over thirty years of history and is devoted to studying, preserving and presenting the collective memory of the community.
Since 2022 the Comune di Fagagna has entrusted the running of the museum activities to the association “Il Cavalîr – Ecomuseo della gente di collina”, which also coordinates the activities of the ecomuseum of the same name, recognised by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region as an ecomuseum of regional interest. The heart of the ecomuseum is the volunteers who preserve the memory of the hill community.
The route presents everyday life and farm work from the late 19th century to the 1950s: kitchen with the fogolâr (traditional hearth), bedrooms, cellar, granary, farmyard, stable and carpentry workshop, as well as sections on clothing, textile fibres and the Fagagna bobbin lace (merletto a tombolo), with the classroom of the lace school. In the broili, the small plot next to the house, mulberry trees, vines of historic Friulian varieties and vegetables grow; in neighbouring buildings the mill, the forge, the inn, the dairy, the schoolroom and the shoemaker’s and tailor’s workshops are reconstructed. During guided tours craftspeople and volunteers demonstrate ancient techniques.
