About the museum
Casa Cavazzini is a building in the centre of Udine that belonged to the Colombatti family from around 1540. At the beginning of the 20th century Dante Cavazzini (1890–1987) rented the ground floor for his textile shop, and in 1937 he bought the whole palazzo, where he lived; the architect Ermes Midena redesigned the first floor, and in 1938 Afro Basaldella painted some murals there.
Under Cavazzini's will the building passed to the municipality. After a long restoration directed by Gae Aulenti, the museum opened to the public in 2012; the works uncovered 14th-century frescoes, a 16th-century cistern of Venetian type and a ceramic deposit from the early Iron Age.
The museum brings together in one site the modern and contemporary art collections of the Civici Musei (civic museums): on the first floor the Marangoni collection and rooms dedicated to the Basaldella brothers Dino, Mirko and Afro, together with the restored Cavazzini apartment; on the second floor the Astaldi collection, with more than 190 works from the 1920s to the 1960s, and the FRIAM collection of American art of the 1960s and 1970s, with works by Willem de Kooning and Frank Stella.
