About the museum

The Teatro Mariani is on the ground floor of the Palazzo della Ragione, known as the “Palazzone”, which Marquis Orazio Fregoso had built in 1605 on the square in Sant'Agata Feltria as the centre of the town's administrative and social life. The large hall on the ground floor hosted council meetings and, from the start, also plays and music performances.

The hall took the form of a true theatre in the 18th century: sources mention its construction in 1723. The structure is made entirely of chestnut wood, with an elongated U-shaped auditorium and three tiers of fifteen boxes each. The entrance was created by removing a box from the first tier and opens to the side of the stage, a solution unlike that of most theatres. In 1872, after restoration work, the theatre was named after the conductor Angelo Mariani, who had begun his musical career in Sant'Agata Feltria.

After the Second World War the theatre was used as a cinema and closed in the early 1970s because it no longer met safety regulations. In 1992 the film crew shooting the reading of the Divine Comedy with Vittorio Gassman chose it as a setting and drew attention to its value. After the last restoration, completed in 2000, the theatre hosts a season of performances from October to April and can be visited by reservation.
