About the museum
The Museo del Disco d’Epoca was founded in 1995 by Roberto Parenti, on the basis of thirty years of record collecting, and was first shown in a garage. Over the years the collection grew thanks to donations from private collectors, often without heirs or worried that their collections would be dispersed.
Since 2012 it has been housed in Palazzo Marcosanti-Ripa, a 19th-century building owned by the municipality of Sogliano al Rubicone, built for Antonio Marcosanti and turned into the Palazzo della Cultura after restoration in 2001. The rooms on the piano nobile (main floor) are frescoed. The palace also houses other civic collections, including the Museo di arte povera.
The museum traces 150 years of sound reproduction with working original equipment: visitors can see and hear recordings on wax cylinders, bakelite discs and even X-ray plates. The collection includes more than 65,000 sound documents, hundreds of objects of contemporary music fandom, thousands of paper items such as opera libretti, scores, signed photographs and posters, and dozens of mechanical and electronic playback machines.
