About the museum
The Museo Civico Archeologico di Verucchio is housed in the former convent of Sant'Agostino, in the heart of the medieval village. From 1985 the Comune promoted projects to set up the collections, which were renewed from 1995 in collaboration with the regional archaeological Soprintendenza (heritage authority).
The museum tells the story of the Villanovan and Etruscan community that lived on the rock of Verucchio in the early Iron Age, between the 9th and 7th centuries BC. The materials come from about six hundred burials spread across four necropoleises and include rich and varied grave goods. Organic objects preserved in the tombs are particularly rare: woollen garments, wooden furniture such as thrones, footstools and small tables, containers and helmets of wickerwork, and food remains.
The route is spread over several levels, from the Sala degli Antenati on the ground floor to the Sala degli Armati and the Sala del Mantello in the basement, and on to the Sala della Tessitrice, the Sala delle Ambre and the Sala del Trono on the first floor. There is also a room dedicated to the sacred area and a touch room with a reconstruction of a princely female tomb.
