About the museum
The Allumiere museum was founded in the early 1950s, when new discoveries prompted the municipal administration to set up an antiquarium. In 1966, on the occasion of the 6th International Congress of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, it received the title of Museo Civico. It is dedicated to Adolfo Klitsche de La Grange, a mining technician of the Papal States and amateur archaeologist, who made the first accidental finds in the Tolfa Mountains, among the earliest Proto-Villanovan evidence in central Italy.
The seat is the Palazzo della Reverenda Camera Apostolica, built around 1580 under Gregory XIII next to the Chiesa Camerale, which housed the offices of the alum mine administration. The museum occupies the entire piano nobile (main floor) and part of the ground floor.
On the first floor are the sections on palaeontology, prehistory and protohistory from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Iron Age, on the Etruscans with their grave goods, and on the Romans. The second floor is devoted to late antiquity and the Middle Ages and to the exploitation of mineral resources from the 15th to the 19th century, with reconstructions and dioramas of alum extraction. The natural history section presents flora, fauna, geology and mineralogy, with a reconstruction of the main habitats of the area.
