About the museum

The watchtower of Capo Nao was built by the Spanish to strengthen the defence of the coast against Turkish raids, as part of the fortification programme launched by the viceroy Pedro de Toledo. Work began in 1550 and was completed around 1568. It has a square plan, large machicolations, an external staircase with three flights and a small retractable drawbridge operated from inside.

In 1810 it was included in the French customs system; after Italian unification it housed the headquarters of a brigade of the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police). Today, after restoration, it is the seat of an antiquarium with underwater archaeology finds from the Greek and Roman periods, including amphorae, coins, ceramics, vases and marbles, and from the top it offers a view over the coast and Crotone.
