About the museum
The Museo civico di Crotone is housed in the Castle of Charles V (castello di Carlo V), a fortress standing on the ancient acropolis of the city, in the historic centre; the castle is state-owned. It was strengthened in the 16th century under the viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo, to a design by Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, and today it houses the museum and the municipal library “Armando Lucifero”.
Until 1966 the museum housed an archaeological collection, which was moved in 1968 to the new archaeological museum. The institution’s new phase began in 1982 in the Torre Aiutante (Aiutante Tower), and the seat was later moved to the premises of the Caserma Sottocampana. The display currently consists of three rooms with 15th- and 16th-century finds documenting the history of the city.
