About the museum

The Parco archeologico nazionale di Capo Colonna extends over a promontory on the Ionian coast of Calabria, on the site where the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia stood. It was one of the main cult sites of Magna Graecia, linked to the city of Kroton. In the area can be seen the remains of the temple, the sacred areas, the fortifications and traces of Greek and Roman settlements.

The museum collects material from the sanctuary and the surrounding territory and tells the story of Kroton in a route with three sections: the earth, with the Roman colony established in the sanctuary area and a hoard of Byzantine gold coins from Punta Scifo; the sacred, with the cippus dedicated to Hera Eleutheria, marble statues, votive offerings and parts of the temple roof; and the sea, with cargoes of marble and wrecks from the Greek and Roman periods recovered along the coast of Crotone.

The site is part of the Parchi archeologici di Crotone e Sibari (Archaeological Parks of Crotone and Sibari).
