About the museum

The so-called Villa di Tigellio lies at the foot of the Buon Cammino hill, not far from the Roman amphitheatre of Cagliari. The name is inaccurate: this is not an isolated villa but an entire Roman residential quarter, whose phases run from the 1st century BC to the 6th–7th century AD. The name derives from a false biography of the Sardinian musician Tigellio, published in 1865, which attributed to him a house decorated with stucco and mosaics in this area.

The news prompted Canon Giovanni Spano to dig in 1876: a domus emerged, known as the House of the Stuccos for its refined decorations. After decades of neglect, excavations by the superintendent Gennaro Pesce in 1963-64 brought to light two more dwellings, including the House of the Painted Tablinum with wall paintings, and a bath building. Further investigations were carried out by the University of Cagliari in 1982-83.

The domus have, at least in their front part, the typical plan of the Roman atrium house. Two signinum (cocciopesto) floors remain visible, along with a small mosaic with a lanceolate flower. According to the Comune and the Region, the site is currently closed to the public and no reopening date can be given.
