About the museum
The museum occupies the 18th-century noble residence of the Marras family, lived in until the 1970s of the 20th century and restored in 1995 in keeping with its traditional architecture, when it became an ethnographic museum. The building stands in the historic centre of Galtellì and has a courtyard with a well and arcades. The writer Grazia Deledda, a Nobel laureate, also stayed here.
The collection numbers around 1,800 objects gathered in the area with the help of local residents. On the ground floor and in the courtyard, the work and domestic spaces are reconstructed: the sheepfold, the wine cellar, the pantry and the weaving room. Among the objects are an 18th-century frame in juniper wood, a donkey-driven millstone with a basalt basin, an old plough and a 19th-century press for grape pomace. There are also traditional children’s games, such as the wooden “metracule” used during Holy Week.
On the first floor the family rooms are furnished, with a drawing room, master bedroom and a kitchen for carasau bread. The route ends with traditional men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, including a bridal dress from the early 20th century.
