About the museum

The Cēsis Museum was founded in 1925, and its collection contains more than 155,000 objects, which makes it one of the largest municipal museums in Latvia. The museum is housed in the Cēsu Jaunā pils (Cēsis New Castle), an architectural monument of the 18th and 19th centuries in the heart of the old town. Together with the manor buildings and the medieval ruins of the Livonian Order castle, this site is one of the most important cultural-historical complexes in Vidzeme and in the whole eastern part of the Baltics.

The museum's research covers the cultural and historical monuments of the castle area, the collection holdings and themes connected with the history of Latvia and Cēsis – for example the history of the Latvian flag, the culture of knighthood in Vidzeme and the Battle of Cēsis. The museum organises exhibitions, offers programmes for pupils and rents out rooms for events.
