About the museum
The museum opened on 23 April 2013, when the centenary of the Valsts Priekuļu laukaugu selekcijas institūts (State Priekuļi Field Crop Breeding Institute) was celebrated. The exhibition is housed in the Selekcijas ēka, built in 1923, which together with the adjacent barn was added in January 2014 to the state list of protected cultural monuments as an industrial monument of national significance.
The building is still used by professional plant breeders, so visitors also see specialised equipment and cabinets in which seeds and plants are evaluated, dried and stored. The collection includes historical documents, equipment used in earlier years for breeding and seed-growing work, and other objects. The exhibition shows how field crop breeding has developed in Latvia and introduces the diversity of cereal, pea and potato varieties.
