About the museum
The Lejasciems local history museum opened on 18 May 1972 in the premises of the secondary school, on the initiative of the school principal Aija Pavāre. In 1978 the museum was given rooms in a building from 1874 – a former flax granary. In 1989 local researchers proposed preserving the memory of the native writer and philosopher Zenta Mauriņa, and in the early 1990s a memorial room dedicated to her was set up at the school.
In 1997 the parish council took over the materials of the school museum. In the centenary year of Zenta Mauriņa's birth the exhibition found a new home in the building at 18 Rīgas iela, where the writer was born, and on 1 December 1997 the parish museum opened to visitors. When Lejasciems became a popular tourist destination, the museum's work changed, and in December 2002 it was reorganised as a centre of cultural-historical heritage and traditions.
The centre has two permanent exhibitions: the old work tools and household objects of Lejasciems, and the Zenta Mauriņa memorial room. The memorial room holds photographs, books, dedications, voice recordings and the writer's work desk, which have travelled from Riga, Australia, Germany and the USA. The centre also holds changing exhibitions and guided tours of Lejasciems and the parish, offers an interactive task in the old tool room and provides tourist information.
