About the museum
The Druviena parish school building was constructed in 1868, and it served as a school until 1951. The poet Jānis Poruks (1871–1911), the literary scholars Kārlis Egle and Rūdolfs Egle, the journalist and composer Jānis Straume and the master of applied art Jūlijs Straume all studied here.
Since 1966 the building has housed a museum that shows what a Vidzeme rural school looked like at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The classroom, a bedroom and a bread-chest room are open to visitors, as well as an ethnographic exhibition on the everyday life and occupations of the people of Druviena since the 19th century. The museum holds art exhibitions and traditional events, such as the Jāņa Poruka dzejas dienas (Jānis Poruks Poetry Days) and Easter.
From 1 June 2025 the museum is a department of the Gulbenes novada vēstures un mākslas muzejs (Gulbene Municipality History and Art Museum).
