About the museum

The Dziesmusvētku telpa (Song Festival Room) is a permanent exhibition of the Latvijas Nacionālais rakstniecības un mūzikas muzejs (Latvian National Museum of Literature and Music), open to visitors since 2023. It was created in honour of the 150th anniversary of the first general Latvian song festival and is the first and largest permanent exhibition devoted to the Latvian song festival tradition.

The exhibition is on the ground floor of the Mežaparka Lielā estrāde (Mežaparks Great Concert Hall) building, while the Kopienas telpa (Community Room) is on the first floor. At its centre is the multimedia installation “Lielākais koris pasaulē” (The Largest Choir in the World) with 128 screens, which resemble the sound panels of the concert hall. The installation tells the story of the song festivals, from the smallest natural sounds of Latvia to the sound of the combined festival choir.

The exhibition also features a copy of the Līgo flag – the most important symbol of the song festival tradition, carried at the head of the procession since the first festival –, the “Laika upe” (River of Time) with 150 years of history, and listening chairs where you can hear the 24 songs most frequently included in the song festival repertoire. Accessibility is supplemented by an audio guide in Latvian, English and German and a video guide in Latvian Sign Language.
