About the museum
The Sakaru Bunkurs (Communications Bunker) in Vecmīlgrāvis is a museum that gives insight into the Soviet era. It was once the reserve command post of the then Oktobra rajons (October District) and the civil defence staff of the Rīgas kuģubūvētava (Riga Shipyard). It was intended for the leadership of the northern part of Riga in emergencies, for example in the event of nuclear war or natural disasters.
The bunker had everything needed for independent operation: communication systems for contact with other important sites, its own electricity and water supply, and safe rooms for crisis managers. Today visitors can walk through the original working rooms, learn how the work was organised and experience the atmosphere of the Cold War.
