About the museum
The museum building, known as Academia Petrina, is one of the few old buildings in Jelgava that survived the Second World War. It was built in 1775 on the initiative of the last Duke of Courland, Pēteris Bīrons, and was the first institution of higher education on the territory of Latvia. In 1818 the Courland Provincial Museum, the second-oldest museum in Latvia, was founded in the building.
Today's museum has for more than forty years honoured the memory of the outstanding Latvian painter Ģederts Elias (1887–1975), and its main value is his collection of works. The exhibition tells the story of Jelgava and the region from prehistoric times to the present day.
