About the museum
The Jelgavas Vecpilsētas māja (Jelgava Old Town House) is one of the oldest and most valuable timber residential buildings surviving in Jelgava; it was built at the end of the 18th century. The Old Town street block took shape in the 18th–19th centuries and is the oldest part of the timber development that was not destroyed in the Second World War.
The building was joined with the neighbouring building at 50 K. Barona Street and restored using historic techniques: the house was raised by about 30 centimetres, new foundations were built and the original timber structures were restored. In 2020 the restoration was recognised as the best entry in the competition “Gada labākā būve Latvijā 2019” (Best Building in Latvia 2019). Today the house contains an interactive exhibition and the Zemgales restaurācijas centrs (Zemgale Restoration Centre).
