About the museum
The museum is on the first floor of a wooden building at 3 Filozofu Street, where Ādolfs Alunāns (1848–1912) lived from 1910 to 1912 and his family until 1926. Alunāns was the founder of Latvian theatre, the first professional actor, director, dramatist and writer, and was already known during his lifetime as the father of theatre.
The idea of establishing a museum arose at the end of the 1960s, and the museum opened on 6 June 1968. Thanks to Alunāns’s grandson Ādolfs Švānbergs, the museum holds more than a thousand original objects. In 2010–2011 the building was restored and the exhibition was supplemented with multimedia; since 2011 the museum has again been open to visitors.
