About the museum
The family home of Jānis Čakste, the first President of Latvia, is located on the bank of the Lielupe in Salgale parish. The building was constructed in the 1930s, and since 1995 it has again belonged to the Čakste family, who live there.
In 2018 a new exhibition was opened in the renovated servants' house. It tells, in a modern way, the story of the first President of Latvia and his family in the context of Latvian history and the development of democracy. The idea of the museum is to give everyone the opportunity to get to know the personality of Latvia's first president and his path to the presidency, and to encourage the wish to follow his ideas of a free, independent and democratic Latvia.
