About the museum
Jānis Zābers was a soloist of the Latvian National Opera and one of the outstanding Latvian opera singers. His stage career lasted ten years (1960–1970), during which he took part in 24 opera productions; he also worked in chamber music and popular music. He spent his childhood in his native home “Vecais Ceplis” (The Old Ceplis), later studied in Riga and trained at La Scala opera house in Milan.
The museum opened on 11 August 1973 – the artist’s birthday, less than five months after his death. The museum is run by the daughter of Zābers’s brother and her family. Photographs from the artist’s life, posters and opera costumes are on display, and visitors can listen to recordings of songs and operatic arias. Next to the house are the Jāņa Zābera ozols (Jānis Zābers’s oak) and a rest area by the Aiviekste river.
