About the museum
The Madonas muzejs (Madona Museum) was founded on 20 September 1944. Until 1990 it was led by Elza Rudenāja, an officer of the Order of the Three Stars, under whose leadership a collection on the history, culture and art of the district was built up. In 1984 the granary of the Biržu muiža (Biržu manor) was restored and extensive art exhibition halls with natural ceiling light were added to it.
On 22 December 2003 the reconstructed museum storage building was opened; the museum buildings are cultural monuments. The museum acquires and researches materials on the history, culture, art and nature of the district, organises expeditions to add to the collection, sets up exhibitions, and runs guided tours and museum education programmes.
The permanent exhibition “Novada arheoloģija” (Archaeology of the District) in the exhibition halls is free of charge, while art and history exhibitions take place in the large halls, the small hall and the attic. The open storage of ethnographic and household objects is in Sarkaņi, and in Lazdona the Haralda Medņa kultūrizglītības centrs (cultural education centre) “Dziesmusvētku skola” (Song Festival School) operates.
