About the museum
The museum has been housed in the Varakļāni palace of Count Mihaels Borhs (1783–1789) since 13 September 1997, but was officially founded in 2001. Valuable 18th- and 19th-century wall paintings and painted ceilings have been uncovered in the palace rooms; they can be seen together with the other palace interiors and the chapel.
The museum has a renewed permanent exhibition on the life and scientific achievements of Mihaels Borhs and on the history of the town of Varakļāni and its surroundings. Exhibitions and themed events take place, as well as museum education, leisure and environmental research programmes. The building houses a tourist information centre, which offers guide services across the whole municipality.
