About the museum
“Kalna Kaibēni” opened its doors in 1929 and is the oldest memorial museum in Latvia. Here the brothers Reinis and Matīss Kaudzīte wrote the first Latvian novel, “Mērnieku laiki” (The Land Surveyors' Times), and about fifty other books. From 1868 to 1882 the building housed the parish school, where the two brothers worked as teachers and taught more than a thousand children.
The museum has preserved the original furnishings of the house, memorabilia from the brothers' travels and everyday objects. In the museum garden visitors can meet characters from the novel “Mērnieku laiki”, see the legendary memory corner and a rest arbour. Since 2020 the garden again has a viewing platform, which the brothers built after their tour of Europe.
