About the museum
The Ķekavas novadpētniecības muzejs began as a local history centre, which on 21 November 1997 was renamed the Ķekavas vēstures, dabas un mākslas muzejs (Ķekava History, Nature and Art Museum); since 2002 it has been the Ķekavas novadpētniecības muzejs. The museum’s task is to create an understanding of the history of Ķekava municipality and to stimulate interest in the caricaturist Edgars Ozoliņš and in caricature as an art form.
The permanent exhibition “Ķekavas novada 5 stāsti” (5 Stories of Ķekava Municipality) reveals the life of local people in the 20th century, through the war and Soviet periods, until the restoration of freedom. A permanent exhibition devoted to the local man and caricaturist Edgars Ozoliņš introduces Latvian caricature interactively.
The museum offers travelling exhibitions on caricature and cartoons and educational programmes on historical themes, and every year it awards the E. Ozoliņa balva (Ozoliņš Prize) in the pupils’ caricature drawing competition “Pa-smejies!” (Have a Laugh!).
